(Ephesians 4:23) Be renewed in the spirit of your minds.

Too often, we perceive the human mind as some kind of mechanical machine.

Especially in the so-called rational West—where reason is supposed to reign—the mind has been functionally separated from the human soul or spirit.

But in Ephesians 4:23, it is clear that Christians are called to be renewed in the “spirit of their minds.”

Our minds are not separate computers sitting on top of our bodies.

Our minds are part of our spiritual inner life. Our conversion to Jesus Christ originates in the “changing” of our mind—what the Bible calls repentance.

The source of all biblical wisdom and discernment is a Spirit-filled mind.

The transformation of our character, attitudes, and morality is the consequence of the renewing of the spirit of our minds.

This is why the intellectual capacity of unbelievers—without the Holy Spirit—is often void of objective ethics. Some of the most educated people—steeped in material secularism—are among the most morally depraved.

The ability for Christians to truly think holistically (that is, with a biblical worldview) is empowered by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

As Christians, we have Spirit-filled minds.

There is nothing wrong with earned degrees—I have three of them. However, the mind without the Holy Spirit is reckless and self-centered.

Take time today to ask God to fill your mind with his holy presence.
