(Exodus 15:3) The Lord is a warrior.

After God delivered Israel out of Egyptian slavery, Moses and his sister Miriam sang a song of victory and triumph (Exodus 15). I encourage you to read the whole chapter.

The phrase, “The Lord is a warrior” is found in this song of celebration.

For many of us we think of God as a peaceful shepherd and a suffering servant. However, we rarely envision the “Lord as a warrior,” the ruling general on our behalf. But, the Bible tells us in many places that God is the one who fights for us and with us in our many battles we face in life.

Below are a few of these Bible passages:

(Deuteronomy 1:30) The Lord your God who goes before you will himself fight for you.

(2 Thessalonians 1:7-8) ...the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire

(Psalm 24:8) The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle!

(Revelation 19:11-16) The armies of heaven were following him.

(Romans 16:20) The God of peace will crush Satan under his feet.

One of the greatest temptations we face in life is to try to win our many battles in life in our own strength. We react to our battles out of emotion and angry. When we do, we lose. It is extremely important for us to call upon “God our Warrior” and his angels of fire to fight on our behalf. He will bring victory. He will overcome. He will bring justice.

Although God fights on our behalf, it does not mean we sit back and live a passive spiritual life.

We must fight in partnership with God as a good soldier of Jesus Christ (2 Timothy 2:3). We

We must fight in partnership with God by putting on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms (Ephesians 6:11-12).

We must fight in partnership with God, for though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:3-5).

Do you see God as a warrior?

Do you see God as the one who fights for us and with us?

Do you fight your battles in life through your own strength?

Let’s exalt our God as our general in our life battles, and engage as good soldiers by being empowered by his Spirit, putting on the full armor of God, and partner with God in our battles with the divine power God gives us to demolish strongholds.
