(Genesis 2:4) The LORD God made the earth and the heavens.
How do we know anything about God?
Do we discover him by meditating under a tree?
Do we figure him out through the formulation of mathematical equations?
Do we stumble upon him through philosophical discussions, and abstract metaphysical speculations?
No! How can the finite uncover the infinite? We can’t. In fact, God’s eternal being is totally unknowable, and is a mystery to our human minds.
One way we know God is when he tells us his Name. God’s Name is not like Joe or Pete, but his Name describes who he is, his attributes and character.
In Genesis 2:4, we read “LORD God.” The word God is generic, but LORD reveals who he is.
In Hebrew, God is the LORD (YHWH). In our English Bibles, God’s name is Yahweh, Jehovah, or Adonai. Yahweh means “to be,” or “I AM”
Yahweh refers to his eternal (no beginning or end) and self-existent (depends on no one and nothing to exist) nature.
Yahweh is unchanging. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is always intimate near and present with us.
When you read LORD (all capitals) in the English Bible, it emphasizes that we serve and worship a God who eternal, self-existent, unchanging, and always present with us.
No matter what happens today, remember that the LORD is always with us and near to us. When we feel anxious, remember the LORD is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
The LORD is our rock and salvation!
