(Hebrews 11:8) Abraham obeyed God and went, even though he did not know where he was going.
As Christians, we too often over-rationalize our faith and obedience to God.
We will obey God if we are sure all risk is eliminated.
We will obey God as long as we remain in control of everything.
We will obey God as long as it won’t cost us too much.
We will obey God if other people think it is a good idea.
We will obey God as long as we can know all the specific details before the journey.
As this verse emphasizes, however, Abraham is praised for his faith because he obeyed God’s guidance even though he had no clue where God was leading him.
Through my long journey of following Jesus Christ, I have been led by God into the unknown many, many times. I was 100% sure of God’s guidance, and yet, I was 100% uncertain about what were obeying God would lead me.
I have learned to trust God’s faithful character over any insecure needs I might feel about not knowing the details of the road ahead.
I have learned that true security is living within the will of God, even when I feel vulnerable and out of my comfort zone.
I have learned to focus on walking obediently on the road that God has placed me, and not try to determine the specifics of what lies ahead.
I have learned that I will stumble and trip along the road, but what is important is that I stay on it.
I have learned to take one step at a time, and not try to leap ahead of God’s guidance.
The fact is, God’s guidance into the unknown is infinitely better than keeping safe inside the finite boundaries of what we know and are comfortable with.
If God leads you to go—whatever direction that is—are you ready to obey him into the unknown like Abraham.
Have you come to a place of faith in your life, where trusting in God’s character has primacy over your need to determine and control your future?
Be assured, God’s narrow road that leads into his unknown is eternally better than our wide road that dead ends in only what we can know and control.
Which road have you chosen?
