(Proverbs 3:5–6) Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
The phrase “trusting in the Lord” is not simply an intellectual assent, or quoting a Bible passage.
It is throwing ourselves facedown before God, and unloading onto him all your anxieties and self-efforts.
It is letting go with all our entire hearts, not holding anything back—each day, casting all our concerns on him.
As humans, we are limited in our understanding, especially about knowing our future.
Because of our limitations, we must resist the great temptation to lean (depend) on our own understanding—trusting in our own ability, strength, and wisdom.
The phrase “in all our ways” in this passage means in our entire lives and at all times.
Acknowledging God is not simply a mental abstract assent that God exists, for even Satan does this.
It means that we live through each day in full fellowship with him, living with a continuous consciousness of God’s presence.
If we live a lifestyle of trusting God—not ourselves—he promises that he will make our paths straight, keeping our lives going in the right direction, and not allowing us to wander off.
He will guide us and lead us toward the desires of our heart, although it might not be along the exact path you would want or choose to go.
Do you live a lifestyle of trusting God concerning your future, or do you have a tendency to depend more on your own understanding?
