(Philippians 2:8) Jesus humbled himself by becoming obedient to death on the cross.

We often think a Christian is humble because they are quiet and act unworthy, but Philippians 2:8 tells us that Jesus was humble because he obeyed God.

In other words, no Christian is practicing humility without obeying God’s guidance in their life.

Christians actually demonstrate pride when we insist on doing only what they want to do.

We usually do not follow God’s guidance because his leading can be very uncomfortable and costly.

God’s guidance can disturb the patterns of our self-determined lives.

For, as we see in the life of Jesus, obeying God did not lead to a rose garden, but to a humiliating and public death on a Roman cross.

The truth is, obeying God can lead us in a direction we would never choose on our own.

We can feel unprepared to do what God is calling us to do.

Obedience to God can cost us not only financially, but relationally as well.

The road God leads us to travel can be very winding and full of hills and valleys.

As a result, obeying God requires us to lay down our own will and follow his will alone.

This is the definition of true biblical humility.

Just before Jesus was arrested and crucified, he prayed and declared to God, “Not my will, but your will be done.”

Are you willing to pray the same thing?

It is a matter of pride or humility.
